Liberalism: A Mental Disability? - February 6, 2011

The Great Depression, like most other periods of severe unemployment, was produced by government mismanagement rather than by any inherent instability of the private economy.
- Milton Friedman
Liberal thinking just doesn’t make sense…
Liberals will actually take the time to block Fox News from their cable or satellite channels. Why? Is an opposing view so offensive that it must be shunned even at the cost of more choice? Why wouldn’t a liberal want to know what the other point of view is? How can you learn and grow if you refuse to allow your points of view to be challenged?
Liberals will tell you Wallstreet is ruining America. Then quote Wallstreet elite when they are trying to convince you the stimulous is working. A liberal regime will hire Wallstreet elite to control the treasury. Wallstreet and government are so intertwined it is difficult to untangle the mess they have made. If “Change you can believe in…” meant more Wallstreet control of government – Obama kept that promise. If Wallstreet is ruining America, why would a liberal government integrate them further into positions of vast power?
Do liberals really want an improved standard of living for all Americans? The answer here can only be: “No”. Any rational look at the wealth of nations and standards of living will clearly demonstrate less government builds wealth for all. Liberals should be clear – they want equality over actual quality. Yes, we can all live a somewhat economically equal existance, but it will be a low standard. The upper middle class in the Soviet Union was allowed a 2 bedroom apartment and public transportation. The lower middle class in America has 3 bedrooms and 2 cars! Yes, the super rich would live a lifestyle far in excess of the lowest rungs. However, even the lowest rungs will have food, shelter, and most importantly: the opportunity to succeed.
Liberals seem to spit in the face of logic when it comes to results. Obama set expectations for what the stimulous would do and not do. Unemployment was not supposed to go over 8% if we approved the stimulous. Unemployment has exceeded 8% even using the ridiculously understated US Bureau of Labor Statistics numbers. Most economists examing the data are arriving at figures 50% higher. So what is the logical solution? It’s obvious to rational people that the stimulous did not deliver as promised, try the opposite – give the money back to the people. For liberals, the answer is “more of the same”.
Liberals claim to value science. This might be news to liberals, but science and science fiction are two different things. Science is a rigorous system of observation, testing, data analysis, and finally a conclusion. How would that system apply to government? Easy – reduce federal power. Allow the states to test theories of government within their borders. Winners and losers will quickly stand out. Testing aggressive government programs by forcing the entire nation to adopt them is insanity, not science. Dispite the massive consolidation of power, we do have some examples among the states that stand out. Oregon has the highest unemployment in the nation – so should we copy what they are doing? Liberals say “Yes!” Oregon has the highest minimum wage, the federal government is going to force that wage on all of the states. If liberals have decided to use science to destroy America, they are on the right track. Recklessly experimenting on the entire population is a recipe for disaster. Choosing the worst examples and emulating their programs nationwide seems to indicate a desire to create negative results.
Note to conservatives: Don’t consider this post an endorsement of your bungling form of thinking. After all, it was you idiots that screwed things up so bad that America thought voting in liberals was a rational idea.

I don’t want an endorsement from some one who thinks George bush was a conservative.I am not an idiot nor do I need an endorsement for any reason.
Americans just wanted change and did not have enough sense to see what that meant.I will say this though, both this administration and the last were pretty clear, for all their vague rhetoric, about the messes they were intending to make. How can anyone be shocked?
Now it is time to stand up and take it back. Our republic is fragile and our constitution is being shredded.Whether any one is conservative or not has no bearing on libertarian values. We need to get a grip on the problem pronto.
I guess you have the right to make any choice you think you can live with.I just don’t want to pay for it.And if that choice drives you to drink or drugs, I am not going to pay for that either.I am not your back up plan so think things through before you act.
It isn’t up to me to get your life, your child or your failing business back on track unless you and I have a bargain.I don’t bargain with the government and if you do ……well stay away from me.
I think I am pretty conservative in my life and views. And I think that if you believe that you understand
conservatism………kiss my ass.You obviously don’t
Be careful who you spit at. Alot of Librtarians are also conservatives. Just because Bush made his mistakes and the Republican party buckled as it did, does not mean that all conservatives agree with those. Conservative simply means that we value the traditional ways of American government. Please do not lump us in with the corrupt. I agreed with every word that was said. You are out of line with your comment at the end.
Tara: The actual conservative is often closely aligned with “traditional ways of American government”, true. Unfortunately, the politicians that run under the conservative moniker tend to be more economically liberal than America can afford. A true conservative budget would reduce spending in government. When was the last time that happened? Without doing the research, I’m going to say President Jackson – 170 years ago was probably the last president to reduce spending during his time in office.
And that’s why I’m willing to lump conservatives in with the corrupt. Because they are. And by “they” I of course mean elected politicians, not you. In my opinion most Americans understand government is the problem, not the solution. Even liberals mean well and are disappointed by those they elect more often than not.
What we all need to do is focus on the simple problems we can solve.
1. One law at time. We need to push for a bill that only allows one issue at a time to get voted on. I can already hear the cry of “But then nothing will get done!” – so be it. If a bill cannot pass on it’s own merits, bribing politicians with district goodies and pork for their cronies is never the right thing to do.
2. Eliminate the income tax. This is the mechanism for social engineering – control over the people. We all intuitively know that government should be under control, not in control of the people. The income tax is 45% of the revenue government takes in. A safe effective government should be able to reduce spending to less than half what it is today, this would leave a surplus to pay down the debt. The US economy would be among the fastest growing in the world without the burdens of tracking, recording, filing, paying, and otherwise wasting time in non-productive ways to comply with this monstrosity.
Fix those 2 things, and we are in the clear. Yes, there are other problems – but those 2 will turn things around in a hurry. All conservatives, and many democrats should find those changes palatable. We’d have a government that was not as appealing to lobby for freebie since bills wouldn’t be laden with pork. We’d have a people empowered because they no longer fear the government.
I am tired of parties and having to be part of some category. If I am going to be listed as anything, I would like it to be logical. That is what America needs more than anything…LOGIC. The whole idea of having opposing sides like we do (especially to major ones) is so the “Nazis” can get us arguing which side is right as apposed to each choice. I agree with many of the things that all of you said, but your arguments are for the category you feel you fall into and not simple common sense. Logic will guide you all to the correct decision, and you will realize you are supposed to be fighting for the same thing and not each other.
Its amazing how people actually do not realise just how stupid they are – this post epitomizes that simple fact. There is a tendency for people to assume that because they think they must not only be right, but also blindingly intelligent – this comes from the old adage of ignorance is bliss.
And this post – without doubt – is one of the supremely moronic things I have ever read. Americans on the whole are without any doubt the dumbest people I have ever encountered – by a LOOOONG way – no doubt, the problem is that they have no concept of how incredibly asinine and feckles they are as they have absolutely no idea of hwat is possible if one simply uses their grey matter – try reading a book morons – and get over the managed talking points of PR think tanks – the rest of us are simply laughing at you.
Stupid: You realize of course that without us stupid Americans you would have had to respond by quill and parchment? Use your superior Australian intellect to be thankful us stupid Americans advanced your way of life.
the strongest argument againts democracy is a coversation with the average american voter
himshawn: The first letter in a sentence should be capitalized. In addition, punctuation will signify the end of your sentence. Finally, America is not a democracy – we are a Republic. That is too many errors to justify your smug criticism. Perhaps you should rethink posing as an intellectually superior political commentator.
SOME day with good luck, we will persuade the masses to embrace the Libertarian Alternative. May I live to see that day.
Your RSS feed doesn’t work in my browser (Google Chrome) how can I fix it so I may subscribe to your site?
I was once a Democrat and lately a Republican. But things are so bad in both party’s I am very very close to calling myself a Libertarian. The more I read and learn the better it looks.
TY Americans. I am an Australian and would like to thanks to the libertarian’s of the USA because of you (and others around the world) it is possible to even have a libertarian party within Australian. Woot since 2001!
The reason I don’t watch FOX News is because it presents crazy, un-founded opinion as serious argument. Argument has to be between two viable perspectives. Calling American Liberals “Nazis” and “Socialists” because they think that a National Health System is a viable alternative to the chaotic situation of healthcare in the US is not serious critique. Rave on all you want FOX, you lost me as a viewer a long time ago.
I was raised Republican and I always listened to my Father, a Banker and and a Banker’s son, who always espoused Libertarian ideals. I never rejected them myself, as in many cases they make sense. However, I also noticed that my Father often worked for many projects in his own community that made no sense when scrutinized with a Randian Libertarian perspective. I have also noticed that in a modern, post-industrial and large country like the United States, Libertarian principles simply will not work in certain situations. Try to be a Libertarian in New York City. It won’t work, and that is why there are hardly any Republican politicians in NYC. Don’t take it so hard, Libertarians, there are other opportunities. But don’t call everyone who sees that Libertarianism is not a viable methodology in their own situation a traitor and a Communist. Grow up, fer Chissakes.
I’ve been a conservative libertarian for as long as I can remember. It’s not easy taking heat from both sides (Although, admittedly, most republicans incorrectly assume I think like they do) but if it’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that brow beating never won anybody any votes. You can’t insult people and expect them to see your point of view. All you end up doing is making people mad and even more entrenched in their beliefs, no matter how erroneous they be.
Sure, the income tax needs to be eliminated, and things like he right to privacy and self-sovereignty should be added as a constitutional amendment. But until the masses understand that only by protecting individual liberties can we succeed as a nation, we’ll just have to make more persuasive case for logic and reason; two things the American people have in extremely short supply.
What we need are more viable candidates who can show the Libertarian agenda works. We need to lead by example, not by falling into the same traps that the Royalists and Communists have.
Don’t just say you’re better than the other two parties. Show them.
You created some great points there. I did a search on the subject and discovered most people will concur with
your weblog.
Liberals have drastically improved the quality of life for people in this country. It may not seem that way when you are having financial woes, but take a look back in history and you will quickly count your blessings to be an modern American.
I’d take 2011 life in America over 1811 life in America any day of the week.
The good old days is a figment of our imaginations. Life is hard for every generation.
Mark, it has less to do with Liberalism than you think. Technology has increased and our knowledge has as well. You say that you’d take 2011 over 1811. I would love to be able to live as reckless as possible without any consequence too, but life is full of them. This high life we take for granted will come crashing down just as it did for those during the great depression. And the recent riots proves just where we’re headed if we continue to embrace liberalism. This plane called liberalism is running out of fuel and we can choose to land it now or have it land for us. It won’t be pretty, recession could strike, but if we don’t do it now, it will be much harder on us and our kids. I don’t know about you, but I don’t want the newer generations living in a destitute US with no rights and working their asses off to pay off our debt to china and other countries.
Mark, Utopia isn’t achievable. And life is hard for every generation, but I’d take poverty and rights over luxury and slavery any day. And slavery will come, if we don’t stop making promises we cannot keep and fight wars we have no business fighting. If liberals don’t quit writing off 14 trillion as chump change. We are in way over our heads with all of this debt.
Albedo, you appear to be saying Americans are about to fall into slavery. What’s your point? You forget America’s already had slavery — and the blame for that lies mostly on capitalism. I don’t believe capitalism is a bad thing at all. Capitalism spurs creativity, production, and efficiency through the promise of a higher station in life to those who succeed. But, capitalism untempered by morals (as with slavery in the Americas) creates every bit a dystopian a society as Lenin’s, Mao Zedong’s, or Fidel Castro’s brands of socialism. And, as everyone with any measure of intelligence knows, it’s hard to enforce ‘morals’. So we need regulation — by the people, through a government — instead.
I read most of these comment, and saw a very distinct trend in them. The people who were obviously libertarian in belief attempted to use logic and reason to defend and/or talk to the democrat and republican readers. For that, thank you libertarian readers weather liberal or conservative libertarian makes no difference.
My 2 cents are that this article, though as slanted as every single article I have ever read, makes more sense than any I have read on CNN or Fox websites. I agree fully that liberalism is destroying this nation, but it is going beyond trying to destroy the Republic, it is also poisoning the minds of our youth against free enterprise and so forth with the liberal invasion of teachers and the media it is no wonder. When has communism ever worked on a scale the size of the US? The only one I know of as big as us failed in the 1990′s after what 50 years? When has a Democracy ever succeeded on a scale the size of the US? I can not think of 1 single example, though both Democrats and Republicans love to call our country a Democracy when it clearly is not nor has it ever been. Unfortunately people think, wrongly so that it is government that has made people’s lives better, when it has not. Governments job is not to make your life better, never has been, it is to control your life. The people’s job is to remain vigilant against the tyranny of the government, and sadly we have and are failing in that!
I think many Americans miss the point… our problem as a nation is plain old MASSIVE CORRUPTION. Trillions of dollars in heavily over-inflated civilian and military programs, perhaps with military contracts seeing the most unrealistic price inflation. In America we simply make corruption legal by playing semantics with legal language, for example:
*political donation = bribery of a government official
*no-bid contract = nepotism in bidding
*expedite fee = legally mandated bribery of foreign customs agents
Power is the control of resources that allows for control of human population. The tools of those with real power are politics, ideology, and religion. mankind has not changed sine the days of the cavemen – only the games played ad the technology have become more advanced. If one only takes a leftist or conservative slant they fail to realize that those with real power manipulate politicians on both sides and allow them to fall as scapegoats so the powerful can pull the strings of political emotions amongst a populace with next generation of politicians. I wish my fellow Americans would be more pragmatic and fall for less PR and BS.
